How to Build UTM Links for Social Media, WhatsApp and Email Campaigns
Ready-to-use UTM examples for Instagram, WhatsApp, email, QR codes and ads, and how to build them quickly with a free tool.
Knowing what UTM parameters are is half the job. The other half is building them consistently for every channel you use, without typos that split your reports. The free SeoSpidie UTM campaign builder takes a website URL and your campaign details and produces a correctly formatted tracking link.
For the meaning of each parameter, read UTM parameters explained.
How to build a link
- Paste the page URL you want people to land on.
- Enter the campaign source, campaign medium and campaign name.
- Optionally add a campaign term (for paid keywords) and campaign content (to tell apart links in the same campaign).
- Copy the generated link. The builder keeps a local history of your recent links in your browser, so you can reuse settings.
Ready-to-use examples
Use these as patterns. Keep everything lowercase.
- Instagram bio link: source
instagram, mediumsocial, campaignbio_link - Instagram story for a sale: source
instagram, mediumsocial, campaigndiwali_sale_2026, contentstory_day1 - Facebook post: source
facebook, mediumsocial, campaignnew_collection - WhatsApp broadcast or status: source
whatsapp, mediumsocial(ormessagingif you track it separately), campaignfestive_offer - Email newsletter: source
newsletter, mediumemail, campaignoctober_2026, contenttop_bannerorfooter_link - QR code on a flyer: source
flyer, mediumqr, campaignstore_opening - Influencer collaboration: source
influencer_name, mediumreferral, campaignsummer_collab
Note: Google Ads adds its own tracking automatically when auto-tagging is on, so you usually do not need UTMs for Google Ads.
Make links presentable
Tagged URLs are long. In emails and buttons that does not matter, because people see the button text. In WhatsApp messages and social captions, a long link looks untidy; place it at the end of the message, or use a reputable link shortener. For click-to-chat links that open a WhatsApp conversation with you, use the WhatsApp link generator instead.
Test before you send
- Click the final link yourself and confirm the right page loads.
- In GA4, open the Realtime report and check that your visit shows the expected source and medium.
- Check the page's link preview with the Open Graph preview tool if the link will be shared on social media.
Use utm_content to compare ideas
The optional content parameter is the easiest way to learn what works inside one campaign. Give each variation its own value and keep everything else identical:
- Two email buttons:
utm_content=button_shop_nowandutm_content=button_see_collection. - Two Instagram stories:
utm_content=story_videoandutm_content=story_photo. - Two flyer designs with different QR codes:
utm_content=flyer_redandutm_content=flyer_blue.
In GA4, add "Session manual ad content" as a secondary dimension in the traffic acquisition report to see which variation brought more visits and conversions.
Keep a campaign log
Record every link you create: date, channel, campaign, full URL. Combined with a fixed list of allowed sources and mediums, this keeps your reports clean even when several people create links.

Frequently asked questions
Should I add UTMs to links in my own website menu?
No. UTMs on internal links overwrite the visitor's real source in analytics.
What medium should I use for WhatsApp?
social works with GA4's default channel groups. Use something like messaging only if you configure a custom channel for it.
Does the builder store my links online?
No. Your recent links are saved only in your own browser.
Is the UTM builder free?
Yes, with no sign-up.
