How to Write SEO Product Descriptions That Sell

A simple structure for product descriptions that rank in search and persuade shoppers, with examples and the duplicate-content trap to avoid.

A product description has two readers. Search engines need it to understand what the product is and which searches it should appear for. Shoppers need it to decide whether to buy. The good news is that the same description can serve both โ€” if it is specific, structured and written for people first.

The duplicate-content trap

Many online shops paste the manufacturer's description onto their product pages. So do dozens of other shops selling the same item. Search engines then see the same text in many places and have little reason to prefer yours. Original descriptions, even short ones, give your page something unique. If you have thousands of products, start with your best-sellers and highest-margin items.

A structure that works

  1. Opening line: who it is for and the main benefit.
"A lightweight steel bottle that keeps water cold through a full day at the construction site or in the classroom."
  2. Key benefits as short bullets. Turn features into outcomes: not "double-wall vacuum insulation" alone, but "double-wall insulation keeps drinks cold for 24 hours".
  3. Specifications. Size, weight, material, capacity, compatibility, what is in the box. Shoppers who reach this point are close to buying and want facts.
  4. Care, warranty and usage notes. Washing instructions, warranty period, how to use or assemble.
  5. Answers to common questions. If customers keep asking whether it fits a car cup holder, say so.

Write for your buyer's words

Use the terms your customers use. If they search "steel water bottle for school", say "school" in the description. If they compare "1 litre" with "750 ml", make the capacity obvious. The keyword research tool suggests buyer-intent phrases from one seed keyword; use the most relevant ones naturally, once or twice. Repeating the same phrase over and over reads badly and helps nothing.

Make it scannable

  • Short paragraphs of one to three sentences.
  • Bullets for benefits and specs.
  • Bold the few details buyers look for first: size, material, compatibility.
  • Keep the most important information above the fold on mobile.

Be honest and specific

Vague praise ("premium quality", "best in class") persuades nobody. Specifics do: "200 GSM combed cotton", "BIS certified", "fits laptops up to 15.6 inches". Accurate details also reduce returns. Never claim certifications, awards or reviews you do not have โ€” it misleads customers and breaks advertising and marketplace policies.

Descriptions in feeds and structured data

Your product feed has a description field too, up to 5,000 characters for Google. A plain-text version of your page description works well. Keep facts in the feed, on the page and in structured data consistent.

Scaling descriptions for large catalogues

For hundreds of similar products, a template filled with real attributes can produce consistent, useful descriptions โ€” as long as each one contains specific details rather than identical filler. The free product description generator does this in bulk from a template and a product list. Read how to generate product descriptions in bulk from a template for the method and its limits. Pair descriptions with strong titles using the product title optimizer.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer a buyer's questions. For simple products, 100โ€“200 words plus specs can be enough; complex products need more.

Can I use the manufacturer's description?

You can, but it will be the same as on many other sites. Rewriting it, at least for important products, gives your page a better chance.

Should I add keywords to every description?

Use the product's main phrase naturally. Do not force extra keywords in.

Do product reviews help SEO?

Genuine customer reviews add fresh, unique content and answer real questions. Never fake them.
