Local Business Schema Markup: Example and Step-by-Step Setup

What LocalBusiness schema includes, a field-by-field example, choosing the right subtype and testing it properly.

If you run a shop, clinic, restaurant, salon or office that customers visit, LocalBusiness schema helps search engines understand the key facts about your business โ€” name, address, phone number, opening hours and location โ€” straight from your website. It supports your local search presence alongside your Google Business Profile.

What LocalBusiness schema is

It is structured data, usually written in JSON-LD, that labels your business details in the Schema.org vocabulary. Search engines read it to confirm and connect information about your business. It works best when it matches your Business Profile and the details visible on your page exactly.

New to structured data? Start with what schema markup is in SEO.

A field-by-field example

For a dental clinic in Coimbatore, the markup would state:

  • @type: Dentist (a subtype of LocalBusiness)
  • name: the business name exactly as on your signage and profile
  • address: street, locality (city), region (state), postal code and country
  • telephone: the main number in international format, e.g. +91โ€ฆ
  • openingHoursSpecification: days and opening and closing times
  • geo: latitude and longitude of the entrance
  • url and image: your website and a photo of the premises
  • priceRange: a simple indication such as โ‚นโ‚น
  • sameAs: links to your official social profiles

Choose the most specific type

Schema.org has many LocalBusiness subtypes: Restaurant, Dentist, BeautySalon, AutoRepair, Store, LegalService, RealEstateAgent and more. Use the most specific one that fits โ€” it tells search engines exactly what you are.

Where to add it

  • On the homepage of a single-location business.
  • On each location page if you have several branches โ€” one block per location, with that branch's details.

Do not add the same LocalBusiness block to every page of the site.

Rules to follow

  • Match visible information. The address and phone in the markup must appear on the page.
  • Stay consistent with your Google Business Profile and directory listings โ€” same name, address and phone.
  • Keep hours updated, including holidays.
  • No fake reviews. Self-written review markup about your own business is not eligible for star ratings and can break Google's guidelines.

Generate and test

The free schema generator builds LocalBusiness JSON-LD from a simple form โ€” no coding needed. Read how to generate JSON-LD without writing code. Then test the live page with Google's Rich Results Test and fix any errors. To see whether your local listing brings visitors, set up UTM tracking for your Google Business Profile.

Common mistakes with local schema

  • Using a generic type like LocalBusiness when a specific one (Dentist, Restaurant) exists.
  • An address in the markup that differs from the Business Profile, such as "Rd" vs "Road" or a missing postcode.
  • Opening hours that are never updated after changes.
  • One block with several branch addresses mixed together.
  • Adding self-written "reviews" to get stars.

Consistency across your site, profile and listings matters more than adding every possible field.

Frequently asked questions

Does LocalBusiness schema improve local rankings?

It is not a direct ranking boost, but it helps search engines understand and trust your business details.

Do I still need a Google Business Profile?

Yes. The Business Profile is the main source for Maps and local results. Schema supports it.

Can I add schema for a home-based business?

Yes, but only show an address publicly if customers visit it. Service-area businesses can describe their area instead.

Where do I put the JSON-LD code?

In the page's HTML, usually in the head section or a custom code field in your website builder.
