Search Intent Types Explained With Examples for SEO

The four types of search intent, how to recognise each one, and which kind of page to create for it.

Two people type "iPhone 16". One wants to buy it today, the other wants to read reviews, and a third just wants Apple's official page. Search intent is the reason behind a search, and matching it is the single most important factor in whether a page can rank. A brilliant article will not rank for a search where people want a product page, and vice versa.

The four main types of search intent

1. Informational โ€” "I want to know"

The searcher wants an answer or an explanation. Examples: how to file ITR online, what is a canonical tag, why is my cake dense. The right page is a clear guide, tutorial or explainer. Selling hard on these pages usually backfires.

2. Navigational โ€” "Take me there"

The searcher wants a specific site or page: Gmail login, Flipkart customer care, SeoSpidie sitemap generator. Unless you are that brand, these are hard to win and rarely worth targeting.

3. Commercial investigation โ€” "Help me choose"

The searcher plans to buy but is still comparing. Examples: best running shoes for flat feet, Zoho vs Tally, budget DSLR review. Comparisons, reviews and "best of" lists with honest pros and cons do well here.

4. Transactional โ€” "I'm ready to act"

The searcher wants to buy, sign up, download or use something now: buy cotton kurta online, free invoice generator, book dentist appointment Coimbatore. Product pages, category pages, tools and booking pages win.

How to identify intent for any keyword

The most reliable method is to search the phrase yourself and study the first page of results. Google has already tested what people want:

  • Mostly guides and articles โ†’ informational.
  • Mostly product or category pages โ†’ transactional.
  • Mostly "best" lists and reviews โ†’ commercial investigation.
  • A mix โ†’ mixed intent. Your page should serve the dominant type and acknowledge the other.

Words in the query are useful clues too: "how", "what", "why" lean informational; "best", "vs", "review" lean commercial; "buy", "price", "near me", "download", "free tool" lean transactional.

Match the format, not just the topic

Intent also tells you the format. If the top results for "GST calculator" are all working calculators, a 2,000-word essay about GST will not compete โ€” you need a tool. If the top results for "how to tie a saree" are step-by-step guides with images, a product page will not compete. Look at the length, structure and media of ranking pages before you write.

Intent and your site structure

Once you sort keywords by intent, a sensible structure appears: informational guides on the blog, commercial comparisons that link to products, and transactional pages that close the sale. Each page has one main job, which also prevents your own pages from competing โ€” see keyword cannibalization explained.

Sorting a long keyword list by hand is slow. The free search intent cluster tool groups keywords by likely intent so you can plan pages faster, and our walkthrough on grouping keywords by search intent shows how to turn the groups into a content plan. Frequently asked questions

What is the most important type of search intent?

None is more important in general. Transactional searches bring buyers, informational ones build awareness and trust. Most sites need both.

Can one page target several intents?

It can cover a secondary intent briefly, but it should be built around one main intent to rank well.

Does search intent change over time?

Yes. Seasonal events, news and new products can shift what people want. Recheck the results for your key searches every few months.

Is search intent a ranking factor?

Not a single factor, but satisfying intent is the core of what Google's ranking systems try to reward.
