UTM Tracking for Google Business Profile: See Your Real Local Traffic

Tag your Google Business Profile links so GA4 shows how many visitors and enquiries your Maps listing really brings.

For a local business โ€” a clinic, salon, restaurant or shop โ€” the Google Business Profile (the listing on Google Maps and in local search results) is often the biggest source of new customers. But in Google Analytics, visits from it are usually lumped together with normal organic search, so you cannot tell how well your listing works. UTM tags fix that in five minutes.

Why the default data is misleading

When someone clicks "Website" on your Business Profile, Google Analytics typically records the visit as Google organic traffic โ€” the same as a click from a normal search result. You see that "Google" sent visitors, but not whether they came from your Maps listing or your website's ranking.

Take your homepage (or the page you link from your profile) and add UTM parameters. A common setup:

  • utm_source=google
  • utm_medium=organic
  • utm_campaign=gbp-listing

Keeping source and medium as google / organic means the visits stay in your Organic Search channel, while the campaign value lets you separate them. Create the link without typos using the free UTM builder.

Step 2: Add it to your Business Profile

  1. Open your Business Profile from Google Search or Maps while signed in, and choose Edit profile.
  2. Under Contact, replace the website address with your tagged link.
  3. If you have appointment, menu or order links, tag those too with a different campaign, such as gbp-booking or gbp-menu.
  4. Save. Changes may take a short while to go live.

Your page should have a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL, so the tagged version does not appear in search as a duplicate. See what a canonical tag is.

Step 3: Read the results in GA4

In Reports โ†’ Acquisition โ†’ Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to Session campaign. The row gbp-listing shows visits, engagement and conversions from your profile. Add Landing page as a secondary dimension to see where profile visitors go.

Tag your Google posts too

Google Business Profile posts (offers, updates, events) can include a button link. Tag each with its own campaign value, such as gbp-post-diwali-offer, to see which posts bring visitors.

What the data tells you

  • How many website visits your listing brings each month.
  • Which offers or posts work.
  • Whether profile visitors book, call or buy on your site.

Combine this with the calls and direction requests shown in your Business Profile performance view for a full picture. For naming rules and common mistakes, read what UTM parameters are in GA4 and how to build UTM links.

Mistakes that break the tracking

  • Typos and capital letters โ€” GBP-Listing and gbp-listing show as two campaigns. Keep everything lowercase.
  • Tagging internal links on your own website, which overwrites the original source.
  • Forgetting the booking or menu links, so some profile visits still appear as plain organic search.
  • Linking to a page that redirects, which can drop the tags on some setups. Link straight to the final URL.

After saving, click the link on your own profile from a phone and check GA4's real-time report to confirm the campaign appears.

Frequently asked questions

Will UTM tags hurt my local rankings?

No. UTM tags only affect analytics. Make sure your page has a canonical tag so the tagged URL is not indexed separately.

Should I use utm_medium=organic or referral?

Organic keeps the visits in your Organic Search channel and is the most common choice. What matters most is being consistent.

Can I track phone calls from my profile with UTM?

No. Calls do not visit your website. Check them in your Business Profile performance view.

How soon will data appear?

Usually within a day of the first tagged visits.
